Dr. Malla Bhaskara Rao is the HOD and Senior Consultant in the Department of Neurosurgery at Ramaiah Institute of Neurosciences, Bengaluru. He holds MBBS, DNB in Neurosurgery, FRCS in Neurosurgery and GMHE in Healthcare Management.

With more than 32 years of clinical experience, Dr. Malla Bhaskara Rao is an experienced neurosurgeon specializing in complex brain, spine and vascular neurosurgical conditions.

He previously served as Professor and Head of Neurosurgery at NIMHANS, Bengaluru and has also served at SCTIMST, Thiruvananthapuram. His extensive academic and clinical career has included training neurosurgery residents, teaching, research and participation in national and international professional organizations.

Dr. Rao has performed more than 10,000 major neurosurgical procedures, including over 1,000 epilepsy surgery procedures. He was involved in initiating epilepsy surgery at SCTIMST in 1995 and has developed significant expertise in the surgical management of drug-resistant epilepsy.

His major areas of interest include brain and spine tumours, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), aneurysms, endoscopic procedures and epilepsy surgery. He also specializes in functional neurosurgery and complex cerebrovascular procedures.

Dr. Rao has made significant contributions to neurosurgical research and has been involved in multiple funded research projects. He has authored and contributed to numerous scientific publications and has served as a reviewer and guest editor for medical journals.

Dr. Rao currently serves as President of the Indian Epilepsy Society for 2025–2027 and has previously held leadership positions in professional organizations related to stereotactic, functional and epilepsy surgery.
